Draw the curtains when taking photos indoors instead of using flash. Window light is soft and directional. In fact, this is exactly what photographers try to simulate with studio lighting. Angle your subject to the light source a little, and a nice shadow will form at the edge of his/her face. This will make your subject's face look 3-Dimensional and add depth to the image.
